The secret magic of dogs

5/18/2015

Hello friends,

As we approach Pet Appreciation Day, I couldn’t help but think about the many celebratory dog holidays.   Ever wondered why we dogs unlike any other animal are so revered as man’s best friend?  Yep. The list of reasons is very long and it has very little to do with our unique ability to perform tricks or secret language.   Just think about all the extraordinary ways dogs contribute to human’s lives their transformative power and you quickly learn to appreciate their magical qualities.
Picture
Don’t get me wrong.  I LOVE cats regardless of their CATitutde, but the inescapble truth is this:  cats can’t save your life!
Picture
And this is why dogs rule.
Picture
Those who have never experienced the unmatched joy of having a special bond with a dog will never know what they are missing out on.  But perhaps the list below can help change that.   As a rescue dog I always strive to find creative ways to inspire love of dogs and adoption.  CAUTION!  Reading this list may bring tears to your eyes.

It’s worth noting that this list was originally written in 1993 by an English dog trainer named Stan Rawlinson, who called it “The 10 Commandments From a Pet’s Point of View.”  Over time the list has been modified slightly, but the main idea remains the same:  It’s a good reminder of why we love dogs in the first place.

10 Things Your Dog Would Tell You

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember    that before you get me.
Picture
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
Picture
3. Place your trust in me—it is crucial to my well being.
Picture
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
Picture
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
Picture
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice.
Picture
7. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.
Picture
8. Remember before you hit me that I have sharp teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
Picture
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.
Picture
10. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old. Accompany me on difficult journeys. Never say: “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there—even my death.

Remember that I love you.
Picture
Hope this inspires you to recognize the magic of dogs and celebrate them for who they are:  man’s best friend!

Now go do the right thing.  Adopt.  Don't shop.

Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

Let's reclaim Mother's Day for Dog Advocacy

5/1/2015

Hello Friends,

Dig this. The other day I checked the Webster dictionary for the definition of Mother.  I was blown away by how simple yet loaded and powerful was the definition.  The conclusion: mothers are miracles workers and because selfless giving is in their DNA, therefore mothers should be celebrated everyday as our unsung heroes. Period.

Picture
But you wouldn't know it just by looking at mothers for whom meeting the daily challenges of motherhood is like another day at the office.  Actually, for some working at the office seems more like taking a vacation.

When I think about the selfless dedication of my own mommy, it’s obvious that not all superheroes come with a cape and not all angles have wings either.  This explains why behind every good kid is a great mom.  I should know.  I turned out to be a good doggie, right?

Picture
Picture
Who else asks for such little return on investment?  I’m talking about a symbolic reward of a hug and a kiss.  Well, as a dog I’m kind of limited in what I can give back to my mommy anyway, right?

Have you noticed how Mother’s Day has become so commercialized that it’s easy to forget what this special day is all about anymore?

Let’s paws for a moment to truly appreciate this special day in honor of all moms including dog moms.

Picture
There is a reason why Mother’s Day is universally recognized as a very important day.  It’s a tribute to motherhood.  The inescapable truth is this. Motherhood is ruff.  It’s the toughest job in the world.

Picture
Motherhood is also synonymous with caring, life nurturing, protecting and preserving life and honoring the sanctity of life.   That’s sounds like a big deal!  So, I’m thinking what could be more important than saving lives? Even a caveman can figured that out, right?

The dog-vocate in me says let’s reclaim Mother’s Day for dog advocacy.  Let’s become a voice for the voiceless.  Let’s extend this natural material instinct to protecting man’s best friend from the horrors of homelessness and abuse.  Let Mother’s Day inspire love of dogs and adoption vs. more consumerism.  Now isn’t that a goal worth sniffing about?

Like all grateful rescue dogs Mother’s Day has a special significance to me too. In a nutshell: I’m all that I am today because of the enduring love of my Mommy.  I know I’m biased.

Picture
Gee, I wonder what special gift can I give my mommy for Mother’s Day?  Mommy keeps saying that she already has the best gift to brag about.  Me!   Well, who am I to argue with Mom, right?   The dog in me has to respect our house rules: #1 Mom’s the boss and #2 see rule #1.

Picture
I know what...
Picture
Thanks Mom for being the best dog mom ever!

Picture
Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

Woof, Woof!!

Translation:
Happy Mother’s Day!!!

CANINE MORNING THOUGHTS

4/23/2015

Hello Compadres!

Ever wondered what’s on the mind of your furry friend?   It might actually amaze you. Yep.  There is so much more to us dogs that meets the eye.

Case in point, today my companion or should say my savior otherwise known as my Mommy, took me on a morning stroll.   It was another day in paradise.  You know, a beautiful sunny morning while heavenly music is “playing” in the background courtesy of the neighborhood birds as we were walking down a beautiful winding trail.

Picture

To spice up the experience, we’d take our time to stop and check out the cool dogs who couldn’t help themselves from joining a sniff fest while their guardians (not to be confused owners) are smiling and enjoying this blissful moment in time.  This was a glorious sight to behold.

But it was also a moment that made me stop and reflect on my life.  It’s almost like I was living in a parallel universe.  It was a sharp contrast to the lives of so many of my furry friends who are subjected daily to the horrors or homelessness, abandonment or worse abuse and death sentence.

Imagine the ruff life of so many of my canine friends who are still out on the streets or imprisoned in shelters.  What’s worse, their voice can’t even be heard.  Talk about taking animal cruelty to a whole new level.

Picture
Picture

I’m such a lucky dog and I know it because I found a fur-ever home.  But I also know that grateful dogs like me are super man’s best friend.

Call me Emo (emotional) or a sentimental fool, but honestly the thought of so many of my furry friends living in a black hole, scared, lonely and hungry with no one to care for them makes me lay awake at night with the same little voice telling me that I’ve got to do something about it.

Picture

So, I decided to become a dog-vocate and be a voice for the voiceless until no dog is left behind.  You guessed it.  It’s also the name of my campaign ‘Fur-ever Friends: until no dog is left behind,’ which is organized by a great nonprofit organization Onespiritoneworld.org.

Here’s a little secret:

Wanna become a better person?  Wanna know what real love is all about? How about an opportunity to enrich your life in ways that humans can’t?  Then you owe it to yourself to run to your nearest shelter to adopt what is sure to be your best friend ever!  Remember, rescue dogs are best breed.  I should know because I’m a rescue myself.

Finally, here’s a novel idea for you that might actually transform your life.  Be the change that you want to see. Adopt. Don’t Shop!!

So, while you chew on this I will chew on my bone.  Paw-fect, right?
Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

No More Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places

2/4/2015

Have you been looking for love in all the wrong places? Are you tired of finding yourself alone and lonely on Valentine’s Day…again? Does it seem like everyone has found love, except you? Well dry those tears. I’ve got good news for you!

You don’t need roses and romance to enjoy the holiday this year. There is this magical place where you can find the most awesome love you’ve ever known. I’m talking about real, unconditional and lasting.  The kind that will even take a bullet for you.  No I’m not talking about Justin Beiber.   Know what’s the best part?   It’s totally FREE!  Yep.  You heard me right.  FREE!!

So, put down the overpriced chocolates, turn off that cheesy flick, and run to the local shelter where love at first sight is waiting for you.  There you’ll find more than just a Valentine for a day.  That’s where you’ll meet your new BFF.   How cool is that?

I should know because I’m a rescued dog myself and I’m on a mission to find a fur-ever home for all of my furry friends too!

So go ahead and don’t make me come over there and lick you into submission because I have a long tongue and I’m not afraid to use it!   Get yourself in the love zone.  I mean get yourself an awesome Valentine Dog so you can have a really happy, yappy Valentine’s Day!

Woof, Woof!!

The Cure for Cabin Fever

2/4/2015

Hello friends,

This time I'm going to keep things short and sweet.  Kinda like me.

I just wanted to shout out to all my friends in the Northeast who are dealing with rough weather and let them know that there is hope.

If you're one of the unlucky few who find yourself snowed in this winter you might be suffering from some cabin fever. Or perhaps, you're all by yourself dealing with the case of the winter blues. Well, allow me to be your dog in shining armor!  I've got the perfect solution.  Just head over to your local animal shelter and adopt a new friend.
Here's a helpful tool to help you find your way.

Adopting a new dog can have many benefits in the dreary winter season. A dog can provide companionship during those dark, gloomy winter days, comic relief when you find yourself feeling down, and even some warm fuzzy body heat to take the chill out of your bones. And best of all, you get a new lifelong friend and the satisfaction of knowing that neither you nor your new friend will ever have to endure another lonely winter.

Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

High Paw: Five Habits of Awesome Pet Parents

2/2/2015

Hi Friends,

Wow! The holidays are behind us and I’ve launched paws first into another fantastic year. One of my favorite parts of reflecting on the holiday season is knowing that it is a time of year when so many of my canine compadres find new homes. This makes me so excited!!! If you or your family found a new furry friend this season, I offer you my congratulations. I see many tail wags and wet kisses in your future. I can promise you that your new pup is very happy to be part of your family. Just remember that adjusting to a new home can be tough on us dogs. Please offer your new friend patience, love, and kindness as they find where they fit into your family. Remember these five things you'll be a happy family in no time.

1.     Good Food, Good Life.

I love to eat! I know I'm not the only one either; all of us dogs love nothing more than to enjoy a good meal. Giving us enough yummy food is one of the best ways that you humans can show us how much you love us. Feed your pups well and they'll have all the energy and strength they need to be your companion, playmate, partner in crime, and very best friend.

2.     Healthy Doggie, Happy Doggie.

We dogs want to be around to love you for as long as we can. Please help us stay at our best by staying up on all of our visits to the veterinarian. Make sure we have all our shots and regular checkups to be sure we are in tip-top shape. If you are a new pet parent, here's some advice to help find a good vet.  And remember the doctor’s office can be a scary place, so show your dog some love to help them get through it.

3.     We Want to PLAY.

We love to play with you. Playtime is so so much fun!! You know you love it too. Laughter and fun aren’t even the best part of playtime because it is healthy too. A good play session gives us doggies a chance to stretch out and build our big strong muscles. Playtime can help you stay healthy too through exercise and stress relief. So, PLAY ON. Woof.

4.     R-E-S-P-E-C-T

As much as we might hate to admit it no dog is perfect. We make all make mistakes. Be kind to your pets. ABUSE IS NEVER OKAY!!!!!

5.     Family is FUR-Ever

When you choose take in a pet you are making a promise and commitment.  Before you make that promise, take a moment to really think about what is best for everyone. No pet deserves to bounce from place to place not knowing what will happen next. So us love and we’ll love you right back.

Remember these easy tips and you will well on your way to dog years of happiness. Congrats again to all you new pet parents and thanks for helping us move closer to go our goal: Fur-ever Friends: until no dog is left behind.

Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

Cutie's bill of rights

6/26/2014

Picture
All humans have the right to…

  • Believe that your dog is Elvis reincarnated who deserves to win the next American Dog Idol.
  • Believe your dog is smarter than all the Presidents of United States.
  • Believe that humans should only be tolerated while dogs should be welcomed.
  • Go to the extreme in pampering your dog even if it means breaking the bank.
  • Get in debt to keep your dog on life support.
  • Secretly love your dog more than your own spouse or children.
  • Wish you could have married your dog.
  • Change your plans to accommodate your dog’s needs.
  • Remain silent but if you do many homeless and abused dogs will not survive.
All dogs have the right to…

  • A safe and nurturing environment free of abuse, intimidation and exploitation.
  • Access to medical care and food & water.
  • Be treated with dignity, respect and love.
  • Expect humans to be a voice for the voiceless and fight for dogs’ life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
  • Do whatever it takes to protect man’s best friend from exploitation, abuse and homelessness.
  • Seek justice for acts of violence and exploitation against dogs.
For more information on how you can help protect the rights of man’s best friend, please visit www.onespiritoneworld.org and Animal Legal Defense Fund - http://aldf.org/blog//.

Patriotic Dogs
“Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.”  ~Moshe Dayan

Happy Independence Day My Fellow Americans,

The three most powerful and inspiring words that make me wag my tail uncontrollably are: We, The People!

Now, as a patriotic rescued dog, I don’t take anything for granted but especially when it comes to inalienable rights, you know rights given to you by God and not the state, and personal freedoms.  I was born to be free, right?

Seriously, it worries me to see how those rights are being incrementally taken away from my human friends.   For example, did you know that Congress is holding hearings on the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA)?   If this bill passes, the Internet and free speech will never be the same.  Also, evidently the threat of Internet censorship is very real and thankfully many caring groups are now
participating in American Censorship Day (http://americancensorship.org/) to protest this bill.

I tell you, if a dog like me, who is programmed to be vigilant with a discerning mind, can get easily distracted by watching too much trash TV, is it any wonder that the voice of many of my human friends is mute?  And we all know what happens when we sleep at the wheel, right?

That’s why celebrating the Fourth of July is such a great reminder of the unique privilege and the enduring power of  “We, The People” to protect the Bill of Rights and the Constitution against any tyrannical government.   In doggie terms, keep your eyes on the prize (your freedoms under the Bill of Rights and the Constitution).

As a passionate dog advocate, I’m naturally constantly looking for creative ways to help my doggie friends in need whose voice can’t be heard.  So, the concept of “We, The People” sparked the idea for me to create “We, The Dogs” and “Cutie’s Bill of Rights.” Imagine, now millions of man’s best friend will be able to enjoy the same inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as humans but especially the right to be free of the horrors of daily abuse, exploitation, homelessness and even death sentence.  Now that’s a novel idea worth barking about, right?

Digg this….

You have more power than you know. So, use it or lose it!

People Power
Also, stay vigilant. Don’t let “We, The People” turn into “We, The Corporations”!

People Power
So go ahead and enjoy your barbecue and hot dogs (no pun intended) and party like it’s 1776, but do as doggies do: don’t let your guards down because if you snooze, you lose!

Want to make it a super pawmazing day?  Use this day as a great opportunity to unite for We, The Dogs and let freedom ring for all.

So, who needs the Constitution? Well, of-course. We, The Dogs!   Now can you say give We, The Dogs a chance?

Forget fireworks to amaze you.  I'm a Lion Dog and you're going to hear me ROAR..I mean ARF ….

Happy Birthday America and have a Woof-tastic Fourth of July.

Hail Cesar MilLan!  A TRUE DOG HERO!

6/10/2014

Dog Hero
Let’s face it.  No dog can live on bones alone.  We all need inspiration and someone to look up to if we’re to make the journey of life worth pursuing, right?

While Cesar Millan’s personal success story of overcoming adversity to achieve mega-success is undoubtly very inspiring, in doggie world the only measuring stick for real success is not the size of fame and fortunate but rather one’s capacity to make a difference.  In other words, you can be small in size but BIG in heart.  Just like me.

How many people, including celebrities, do you know who not only talk the talk but also walk the walk?   That’s because in the words of Tom Brokaw “It’s easy to make a buck; it’s tough to make a difference.“

Believe me when I tell you that having this kind of an all-consuming passion for making a meaningful difference especially in the lives of rescued dogs as displayed by Cesar is no walk in the park.  It’s nothing short of a true labor of love.  I should know because, as a rescued dog myself, I’m proudly obsessed with a similar passion.  That’s why I agreed to use my star power to help end the horrors of abuse, exploitation and homelessness faced daily by millions of dogs through ‘Fur-ever Friends: until no dog is left behind,’ a wonderful campaign organized by One Spirit, One World (www.onespiritoneworld.org).

I know that for me advocating takes up every waking hour of my life.  Well, except for the times when I have to enjoy my treats, play ball, release my inner lion humping on my toy tiger, chase the ducks, hunt for lizards, blissfully sunbath, take long naps, help my mommy run errands, meet and greet important people, attend red carpet events mingling with celebrities, posing for the pawpawrazzi. Woof, woof, don’t stop me. I’m on a roll.   But you get the picture, right?

There is an endearing adage that says: “Mi casa, su casa” (i.e. my home is your home) to express generosity of spirit.  But in doggie terms it translates into “anyone who is a friend of dogs, he/she is also my friend.”

So, for me Cesar Millan is first and foremost a dog hero and a gift to all rescued dogs.  And for that reason, I aspire to follow his footsteps too.

Now don’t you wish they all could be like Cesar Millan?

Until we our paths crosse again my pawmazing friends! Woof woof!
