The secret magic of dogs

Hello friends,

As we approach Pet Appreciation Day, I couldn’t help but think about the many celebratory dog holidays.   Ever wondered why we dogs unlike any other animal are so revered as man’s best friend?  Yep. The list of reasons is very long and it has very little to do with our unique ability to perform tricks or secret language.   Just think about all the extraordinary ways dogs contribute to human’s lives their transformative power and you quickly learn to appreciate their magical qualities.

Don’t get me wrong.  I LOVE cats regardless of their CATitutde, but the inescapble truth is this:  cats can’t save your life!

And this is why dogs rule.

Those who have never experienced the unmatched joy of having a special bond with a dog will never know what they are missing out on.  But perhaps the list below can help change that.   As a rescue dog I always strive to find creative ways to inspire love of dogs and adoption.  CAUTION!  Reading this list may bring tears to your eyes.

It’s worth noting that this list was originally written in 1993 by an English dog trainer named Stan Rawlinson, who called it “The 10 Commandments From a Pet’s Point of View.”  Over time the list has been modified slightly, but the main idea remains the same:  It’s a good reminder of why we love dogs in the first place.

10 Things Your Dog Would Tell You

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember    that before you get me.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me—it is crucial to my well being.

4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.

5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.

6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice.
Picture
7. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.
Picture
8. Remember before you hit me that I have sharp teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.

9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.

10. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old. Accompany me on difficult journeys. Never say: “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there—even my death.

Remember that I love you.

Hope this inspires you to recognize the magic of dogs and celebrate them for who they are:  man’s best friend!

Now go do the right thing.  Adopt.  Don't shop.

Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

Let's reclaim Mother's Day for Dog Advocacy

5/1/2015

Hello Friends,

Dig this. The other day I checked the Webster dictionary for the definition of Mother.  I was blown away by how simple yet loaded and powerful was the definition.  The conclusion: mothers are miracles workers and because selfless giving is in their DNA, therefore mothers should be celebrated everyday as our unsung heroes. Period.

Picture
But you wouldn't know it just by looking at mothers for whom meeting the daily challenges of motherhood is like another day at the office.  Actually, for some working at the office seems more like taking a vacation.

When I think about the selfless dedication of my own mommy, it’s obvious that not all superheroes come with a cape and not all angles have wings either.  This explains why behind every good kid is a great mom.  I should know.  I turned out to be a good doggie, right?

Picture

Who else asks for such little return on investment?  I’m talking about a symbolic reward of a hug and a kiss.  Well, as a dog I’m kind of limited in what I can give back to my mommy anyway, right?

Have you noticed how Mother’s Day has become so commercialized that it’s easy to forget what this special day is all about anymore?

Let’s paws for a moment to truly appreciate this special day in honor of all moms including dog moms.

Picture
There is a reason why Mother’s Day is universally recognized as a very important day.  It’s a tribute to motherhood.  The inescapable truth is this. Motherhood is ruff.  It’s the toughest job in the world.

Picture
Motherhood is also synonymous with caring, life nurturing, protecting and preserving life and honoring the sanctity of life.   That’s sounds like a big deal!  So, I’m thinking what could be more important than saving lives? Even a caveman can figured that out, right?

The dog-vocate in me says let’s reclaim Mother’s Day for dog advocacy.  Let’s become a voice for the voiceless.  Let’s extend this natural material instinct to protecting man’s best friend from the horrors of homelessness and abuse.  Let Mother’s Day inspire love of dogs and adoption vs. more consumerism.  Now isn’t that a goal worth sniffing about?

Like all grateful rescue dogs Mother’s Day has a special significance to me too. In a nutshell: I’m all that I am today because of the enduring love of my Mommy.  I know I’m biased.

Picture
Gee, I wonder what special gift can I give my mommy for Mother’s Day?  Mommy keeps saying that she already has the best gift to brag about.  Me!   Well, who am I to argue with Mom, right?   The dog in me has to respect our house rules: #1 Mom’s the boss and #2 see rule #1.

Picture
I know what...

Thanks Mom for being the best dog mom ever!

Until we meet again my pawmazing friends!

Woof, Woof!!

Translation:
Happy Mother’s Day!!!
